The methods of making Oriental rugs are weaving and knotting. Basic handlooms have been used to get the finest of rugs. Wandering nomads have used two adjacent trees as a loom to get rugs made. Looms can be vertical or horizontal. Village loom, Tabriz loom and the loom with rollers are further divisions of the vertical looms. Apart from weaving and knotting two other methods not commonly used are flat-weave and soumak. The Turkish and the Caucasians use Turkish knots while the Turkoman and the Persians use the Persians knots. The Persian knot is more common in the East to make Oriental rugs.
