if your tank is still cycling, you will need to do more often water changes but also smaller ones

however, i would still stay away from any chemicals
IMO, i would get just a water conditioner and a small pump which you plug in over night, when you’re on a reststop somewhere
if you do a waterchange every time you stop, you won’t really have to worry about ammonia
Your ammonia isn’t going to spike that much to worry about adding additional chemicals to the water. This is going to lower the O2 rate in the tank while traveling. When you stop for the evening, simply change water. Or carry a gallon or two of water. (Been there done that)
Yes they sell ammonia lock at wal mart. You at this point may be better off with the bagged kind and not the chemical.
